What is Morris-style wallpaper?

Morris-style wallpaper is the flat, nature-drawn pattern of the Arts and Crafts movement: trailing stems, birds among berries, acanthus and willow, repeated with an honesty that Victorian high ornament had abandoned. William Morris began printing in 1864 and spent the rest of the century arguing that a wall should carry something drawn from life rather than something merely elaborate. Mayflower's patterns in that tradition are original designs, drawn in Rhode Island by co-owner Jonathan French and printed in Pennsylvania.

Why it still reads as modern

The Arts and Crafts instinct was to flatten and simplify, which is why these patterns sit comfortably in rooms that would reject a heavier, more ornate print. A Morris-style botanical gives a contemporary space age and appetite without period fuss. It is the reason these designs have never really gone out of print.

What makes a Morris-style pattern good

Look for repeats that read as growth rather than grid, color drawn from the garden rather than the palette chart, and a scale that suits the wall it is going on. Jonathan grew up inside a British pattern house, his mother Anna French's, and spent a decade at Thibaut before starting Mayflower. These patterns come out of that lineage rather than a reference photograph.

Choosing a colorway

Read the room's light before you commit. A north-facing room deepens a dark ground, while a bright room can carry a denser, higher-contrast pattern. Order a sample from any pattern page and live with it on the wall through a full day. Samples ship free, and color shifts more than most people expect.

Papel pintado victoriano
