What makes a wallpaper moody?

Depth, mostly. A moody pattern sits in a dark ground and lets the design emerge from it rather than rest on top of it. Black, midnight blue, plum, gunmetal, storm gray. The effect is enclosure rather than gloom, which is why these papers suit the rooms people are least certain about: the windowless powder room, the north-facing bedroom, the dining room nobody sees in daylight.

Will it make the room dark? It will make the room feel smaller and more deliberate, which is usually the point. A dark paper in a bright room reads as considered. A dark paper in a dim room stops apologizing for the light it does not have. Think twice only about rooms you need to feel larger.

Where it works. Dining rooms, powder rooms, hallways, studies, bedrooms with heavy curtains. Anywhere you walk into in the evening rather than the morning. Ceilings, if you are willing.

Removable options. Several of these patterns are available as peel and stick, so a dark room can be a decision you reverse.

Choosing a colorway. Dark grounds shift more than pale ones under artificial light, so order a sample from any pattern page and look at it after dark as well as in daylight. Samples ship free.
