What is grasscloth?

Grasscloth is a wallcovering woven from natural plant fibers such as sisal, jute, and reed, which give it a hand-woven texture and gentle color variation. Mayflower carries grasscloth in two forms, and the difference matters when you choose.

Real natural grasscloth is woven from actual plant fibers. It is a natural, unprinted material, prized for its organic texture and slightly irregular, artisanal look, and it is best in bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms where you want warmth and depth.

Faux grasscloth is Mayflower's printed and embossed Type II vinyl, made to mimic that woven texture. Because it is a durable, scrubbable vinyl, it resists moisture and traffic, which makes it the practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and backsplashes. Being a vinyl, faux grasscloth is not part of Mayflower's PVC-free range; the real grasscloth is a plant fiber with no vinyl at all.
